When confronted with a Table Topic question, you have to act quickly, to think quickly, to make a snap decision – do you tell the truth or do you lie?

One useful tip for table topics is talk about what you know, speak from the heart, make it personal. Talking about yourself or your life is easy because you have all the facts there, all you have to do is talk.

Can you find a way to relate the topic to your life?

Is there a story that fits in with the topic?

An event in your life,or the life of friends or family?

Have you experienced feelings or emotions that parallel this issue?

Is this something you actually know about?

Making it personal works very well because it’s easy to remember stories and situations and to twist them to suit your purpose but also because personal stories help you to connect with the audience, audiences love personal stories.

Remember, table topics is not about telling the truth or giving a logical well-thought out answer to a topic or question, it is about getting you to talk, about being put on the spot and surviving. To survive you must talk, and to talk you must have something to say but if you don’t have anything to say or you don’t know anything about the subject, don’t let that stop you!

Use your imagination, make up a story, imagine yourself to be someone who knows the answer to that question and bluff your way out of it -no-one else probably knows much about the subject either and if you sound confident about what you’re talking about something then people will start to believe that you actually know something…

When you get creative you don’t just have to pretend that you what you’re talking about, you have in your power the full range of your imagination, go crazy, talk about nonsense, the bizarre or the unbelieveable – entertain your audience, make them enjoy listening to you, the more they enjoy you, the more you’ll relax and enjoy the experience and what could be better than that?

So the next time you’ve been called up on stage by an evil table topic master be sure to lie, steal, cheat and use every trick you know to craft an amazing speech out of thin air….
